Hear, my son, and accept my sayings And the years of your life will be many. Proverbs 4:10 (NASB)
How wise are you as a parent? Are others seeking your counsel when they have an issue with there child? This is probably one of the biggest testaments to how your parenting ability is viewed by others. After all, how many people with children really want parenting advice from someone who doesn’t have children?
Being a wise parent matters. It matters because if we, as parents, are unwise we are unable to tell our children as Solomon did, “Hear, my son, and accept my sayings, And the years of your life will be many.” When children are young (toddlers, pre-k, and elementary age), the majority hang on every word their parents say. It isn’t until children get older that they start rejecting what their parents, or other older, wiser men and women have to say. I know this because I was one of those children, as were friends of mine growing up.
Teaching children in kid’s ministry is a blessing because we are to be partners with parents and guardians. In the children’s ministry I am involved in we teach the truths that “God made you, God loves you, and God’s wants to be your friend forever.” These truths are so basic yet how often do we as adults get this wrong, or forget it all together?
As godly men and women we should be teaching the things of God’s Holy Word because it is the book of timeless truths God calls believers to live by. Teach children that God desires us to love Him with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. He also desires that we love our neighbors as ourselves. Jesus told us that these are the greatest commandments in Mark 12:30-31.
Paul reminds us that there is a commandment with a promise attached to it. That commandment is to “honor your father and mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the Lord your God gives you.” Honoring our parents, and teaching children to honor their parents (any people in general) is what God commands us. Following these commands give life; after all God said it would.
I do believe that our years will be made many before the Lord when we accept godly teachings. Will these be earthly years? I suspect so, but more than our earthly years being extended, it is our hope of heavenly years being an eternity. Listening and accepting instructions that are from the mouth of God through one of His earthly agents brings the hope of salvation. It gives instructions on how to live firmly in God’s presence while on earth, and as we move forward into heaven. Hear and accepts a godly person’s sayings. Rest upon the promise of your life being many years.
